Colonsay Book Festival 2017

Posted by:

As the doors closed on the 6th Annual Colonsay Book Festival on the last Sunday in April, it marked the end of another successful chapter in life of what has become one of Scotland’s literary treasures. At the same time it was a poignant moment because, as Dilly Emslie, at the helm since the Festival’s inception, closed the festival she also stepped down as its Director. Once again Dilly led her hard working festival committee to produce an outstanding event ...

Easter on Colonsay

Posted by:

Eastertide and the island throws off its Winter weeds, welcomes regular and new visitors, and sees the year’s first flush of social sporting events, set of course in the context of its religious festival.  For the outdoor events the weather was seasonally mixed, with showers on Saturday giving way, before the weekend ended, to a flourish of warm sun, well suited for basking.

COMMUNITY TO GAIN NEW LAND POWERS.

More than 40 island residents gathered in the Village Hall on Tuesday, 23rd March, to hear all about new powers granted to them by the Scottish Government.  Land ownership is currently a burning issue on the island, as CCDC is trying to build much-needed social housing units for the 10 or so young people who are either entirely homeless or are inadequately housed.  Attempts to purchase land ...

On the 10th and 12th March two fundraisers were held, organised by Rosalind Jewell, to raise money for Positive Action in Housing & Syria Relief. The former was a cake sale in the pantry, with delicious and plentiful homebakes kindly donated by the community. Folk drifted in and out between 1pm and 4pm – some even coming back for a second go at the table overflowing with varied cakes – and difficult topics came to  discussion ...

Jane Smith – Wild Island

WILD ISLAND. A year in the Hebrides” by Jane Smith.

Have you ever listened to Corncrakes calling on a star-lit night? Have you crossed the Strand to Oronsay, wading through the reflection of the huge Hebridean sky? Did you know that cuttlefish fly through the water here like winged pink elephants? And have you seen the swooping flight of red-billed choughs as they play in the sea breeze?

Ceòl Cholasa 2015

Posted by:

After a night spent preparing and wrapping rolls for 74 packed lunches it was a relief to finally finish work and get ready for the excitement to come.

The ferry trip to Colonsay is always where the Ceol Cholasa feeling begins and this year was no exception. There were lots of familiar faces and a blether about what lies in store in the next few days ensued over a pint or two.

After I had settled ...

Connect with Colonsay

Another year, another beautiful October and another Connect with Colonsay; a multifarious, month-long extravaganza of arts, agriculture, history, food, felting…everything. With fantastic weather for the most part the festival’s array of guided walks and outdoor activities were a success and cosy evenings spent in the hotel saw good attendance. The wine & cheese tasting hosted by Donald Paterson and the whisky tasting hosted by Rachel MacNeill both had people desperate to get in (but certainly not so ...

Bonfire Night

Posted by:

Remember, remember…on the 5th November we had a lovely fireworks display and bonfire to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night. Donald and the fire brigade deftly handled the explosives and through the kindness of the community (overjoyed at the chance to get rid of those old palates that have been sitting beside the shed since potentially prehistoric times) a spectacular bonfire was constructed. Mulled cider was served with mulled apple juice for the children and sweeties were passed around the ...
