The Colonsay App

Posted by:

Notice of a special App was given in our last issue.  Since then over 60 “places of Interest” have been visited, described, photographed and  mapped and committee members of the Colonsay & Oronsay Tourism Marketing Group are busily preparing details of local businesses, details of beauty spots and other materials with which to “populate” the application.

Technical progress is very good and a mock-up version has been seen and approved.  There was quite a debate as to a suitable title but ...

CCDC Meeting 8th January

Posted by:

This meeting had been heralded by both a two-page letter from the remaining four Directors and a subsequent newsletter, with a view to encouraging members of the community to adopt a more proactive attitude to this vital community organisation.  The meeting was held at the Service Point in challenging weather, with driving rain and winds already gusting to over 40 knots and which were later to exceed 75 knots.  Despite these conditions the four directors and the remaining job-sharing half ...

Colonsay Community Development Company

Posted by:

The Directors of CCDC recently circulated island households, advising them of the next scheduled Board Meeting, 8th January, which is as usual open to all shareholders (and apparently to members of the public also).  In their message they pointed out that the Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary and two directors had recently resigned, together with one half of the job-sharing Local Development Officer.  As things stand, the remaining four directors constitute a bare quorum; shareholders are invited to attend the next meeting ...

The Corncrake

The editor’s chair is vacant still – the position is unpaid, but it is rewarding in other ways.  The main purpose of the magazine is to maintain links with the island’s extended community – friends, relations, regular visitors, occasional visitors or people whose roots or hearts are in the island.  If you live in Colonsay please contact any Director of Colonsay Community Development Company to let them know you might be interested.

Other Activities

Other local activities include the Scottish Country Dancing practice sessions held on Wednesday evenings, led by Seamus and Christine and supported by about a dozen folk.  There is also a Badminton Group, meeting on Tuesdays (and sometimes Thursdays), there is the Quiz Night held every Friday (in the Pantry) and a new Gaelic Learners Course is about to commence.  People still use cars, but there is growing trend towards horses as well – almost 10% of the winter traffic is equine! ...

Local Development Officers

Grace and Hannah, two unsung heroes who are achieving truly amazing things.  Trying to make things easy for oneself, your temporary editor asked them for an update:

‘Recycle for Colonsay’ is an ambitious project which aims to change the community’s attitude towards waste, recycling and minimising our carbon footprint as an island. We are seeking financial support from the Climate Challenge Fund over a 12 month period to help us educate and encourage the community to reduce CO2 emissions in a ...

The Community Garden – Planning for 2015

Posted by:

The Community Garden has gone from strength to strength with the grass now resembling a respectable lawn and the flower beds establishing themselves. With the threat of westerly storms just round the corner, the garden is now bedded down for the winter with only an extra layer of seaweed mulch as a final task.
Looking forward to the next growing season and following the great success of this summer’s Big Tea there are plans to hold a similar event this ...

Colonsay Community Council

Posted by:

The most recent meeting was on October 7th and the main topic was the cost of freight.  Various residents had kindly provided information on charges levied and it was noted that, as usual, none of our freight forwarders had responded to requests for tariff sheets.  Contact was to be made with our public representatives and consideration was given to holding a Public Meeting, inviting Cllr. Robin Currie and an Oban Times representative to attend.  It was agreed that ours is ...

Colonsay Community Development Company

As a member of the public one attended part of the most recent meeting of CCDC.  As a novice one may have missed or misunderstood part of the proceedings, but it was certainly impressive to see about sixteen people were sufficiently interested to attend, whether as mere observers or as part of the Board and its team.  Perhaps 15% of the adult population, sadly something of a contrast with the average church attendance but doubtless a sign of the times.
