Easter on Colonsay

Eastertide and the island throws off its Winter weeds, welcomes regular and new visitors, and sees the year’s first flush of social sporting events, set of course in the context of its religious festival.  For the outdoor events the weather was seasonally mixed, with showers on Saturday giving way, before the weekend ended, to a flourish of warm sun, well suited for basking.

Church Exhibition

On Wednesday 16th March the community was warmly welcomed to a preview of the Arts & Crafts Exhibition at the Parish Church, Scalasaig with refreshments provided by Gavin & James at the Pantry. All of the exhibits were donated and will be sold towards the cost of the Belfry Restoration. Church of Scotland Renovations

Following an architect’s inspection, two Georgian windows at the church were condemned, creating a serious financial challenge for the tiny congregation.  It was decided to launch an appeal for funds, but also to completely change the approach to ongoing maintenance.  In the past, work has been commissioned as and when required but this is now recognised to be inefficient.  Instead, an ongoing Fabric Fund has been established and maintenance is moving onto a proactive footing – each autumn, necessary work ...

Arts & Crafts Exhibition 2016

An exhibition of handicrafts will be mounted in the Parish Church to run from mid-March until the end of SpringFest 2016; all items will have been donated by their creators and will be offered for sale in aid of the Fabric Fund. Everything will have a fixed price, anything sold will be available for delivery after the exhibition has ended and any item not sold will be returned to the artist or craftsperson in question.

Church Windows Appeal

Readers will remember that the Parish Church has two dangerous windows and has launched an appeal at http://www.colonsay.info/text/Church%20Appeal.htm  The progress of the appeal is being regularly updated at that site, and Hazel Smith has kindly submitted applications to a couple of potential grant-givers on behalf of the parish.  Amongst other things, a permanent page on JustGiving is being arranged, courtesy of our local publishing business House of Lochar, which has agreed to pay the monthly subscription fee.
